The Ordinance will provide for the protection of critical infrastructure and wildfire risk areas by prohibiting camping in certain sensitive areas, including: - At or near “Critical Infrastructure”;
- In a wildfire risk area (as specifically defined in the Ordinance);
- Within 150 feet of the high water of the Russian River;
- Within five hundred (500) feet of a well site; and
- Within 10 feet of a building entrance/exit, or a driveway or loading dock.
Police Chief Jason Ferguson presented the Ordinance to the City Council.
Protection of Critical Infrastructure and Wildfire Risk Areas Presentation
The proposed amendments to the City's code ensure that the City’s camping ordinance aligns with recent legal decisions while still providing the City with options to discourage homeless encampments, prevent garbage buildup and address public health issues. The Council is slated to consider approval of the updated Ordiance at the October 26th Council meeting.

The project is a continuation of the past efforts to reduce fire threats to our community by reducing fire fuels through the reduction and removal of fire prone vegetation and ladder fuels with the Porterfield Creek Open Space (see before and after pictures below).
The Project details for the Phase 3 project are as follows: - Length of work: Wednesday, October 5th - October 14th
- Hours of work: 7:30am - 3:00pm daily
- Proposed Prescriptive Burning: Mid-December
Portions of the Main Preserve Trail at Porterfield Creek Open Space remained closed to the public while the vegetation management work is performed. Closure signage will be visible at the Welcome Bridge with arrows diverting hikers left, up the Tank Trail.
A closure sign is posted on the bridge at the intersection of the Main Preserve Trail and the 3 Bridges Trail, with arrows also providing alternate routes. Parks UpdateLocal contractor Economy Tree Service continues the preventative tree pruning effort trough out all City Parks. The last major Project will take place at the Cloverdale Library next week on the 17th -18th. Parks Superintendent Hector Galvan will work closely with Economy Tree to perform a cabling safety inspection on one of our oldest tree within our parks department. The 300+ years Valley Oak is located near the Library entrance. Any pruning activities on mature oaks is critical do to their inability to heal larger wounds. Please use extra cation while visiting the Library next week while the work is being performed.
Parks staff worked on the Healdsburg Island olive tree grove located on Healdsburg Ave, all trees were winter pruned as well as headed the lavender that borders around the island. This section of landscape is part of L&L District Vintage Meadows. A significant two day mowing was performed at the L&L District The Cottages, do to the early rain that we experience as well as the higher heat temperatures the vegetation was in need of extra maintenance with the goal to create a safer open space and reduce fire danger. 30 Yards of mulch were broadcast at Furber Park near the Pickleball Construction Project, the equipment traffic during construction created tire tracks and loose dirt, the woodchips were intended to create a nice layer of ground cover to avoid sleeper conditions during winter. Parks continues to accommodate all sporting events in our playing fields as well as weekly mowing events at each of the City Parks.

Fire Won't Wait....Plan Your EscapeHome fire escape planning and practicingIt is important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different. Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them! Smoke alarms
Smoke alarms sense smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger. Smoke alarms need to be in every bedroom, outside of the sleeping areas (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of your home. Do not put smoke alarms in your kitchen or bathrooms.
Choose an alarm that is listed with a testing laboratory, meaning it has met certain standards for protection. For the best protection, use combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. These can be installed by a qualified electrician, so that when one sounds, they all sound. This ensures you can hear the alarm no matter where in your home the alarm originates. About Fire Prevention Week
Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
