Parks UpdateParks staff completed several projects throughout Parks and L&L Districts this week. Preventative tree pruning was performed at the Cloverdale Senior Center, with the maturity of the Live Oak trees requiring the services of a local contractor and a 70ft boom lift truck.
Weight reduction is key in pruning Oak trees before winter to minimize potential limb drop. Removing damaged or diseased branches that pose a safety hazard can benefit a tree’s overall health and improve the overall look of the tree once it has leafed out in the Spring. Opening up the tree can increase air circulation and allow more sunlight in to the interior which then minimizes the number of pest and diseases for a healthier tree. The water wagon was put to use for an entire day to supplement the irrigation system and to help with the extreme heat wave that we have been experiencing the last few days. Keep in mind, the best time to water your lawn is in the early morning while temps are lower, which allows water to soak deeper into the soil. Watering twice in the day can also have a significant effect on lawns and playing fields, it can slow down the evaporation process and retain a larger moister content from the previous watering cycle. A total of 6,000 gallons of backwash water was broadcast throughout Furber Park and Second Street City Park. Several hours were allocated to the L&L District Ioli Ranch. Parks staff pruned numerous trees as well as one block long of shrubs and ground cover. A couple of leaks were also identified and repaired. Arborist requests were addressed, as well as extra park maintenance due to the recent three day weekend.
