About the Chief of Police
Acting Chief Stewart's law enforcement career spanned 35+ years with the Cotati Police Department.  It began in April 1974 when he was hired as a Reserve Police Officer and then he quickly assumed the duties of a full-time officer.  Bob was steadily promoted within the organization - Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and ultimately to Chief of Police in 1996.  He left the City of Cotati in July 2010.  During his career, Bob served as the regional representative to the California Peace Officers Association for several years.  As a member of the Sonoma County Chief’s Association, he held officer positions and for many years served as the Association’s liaison to the County’s emergency management operations.

In the year 2000, the City of Cotati began the process of developing plans to construct a new police facility.  Throughout the process Bob was instrumental, assisting with design features for the building, working closely with the architects, vendors and other professionals and ultimately overseeing the facility construction.  In 2003 the new Cotati Police Facility was completed and was the country’s first “green” police facility to be awarded and receive the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership and Environmental Design (L.E.E.D.) certification.  Bob is currently assisting the City of Cloverdale with overseeing the new police facility project.

Bob describes his leadership style as participatory and one that encourages community interaction and relationships.  Giving back to the community is a priority to Bob who has been a member of the Rohnert Park-Cotati Rotary Club since 1991, serving in Board positions most notably as the Community Service Director for approximately 15 years.  He also serves as Rotary District 5130’s Abuse Prevention Coordinator focusing on youth safety and training Rotarians.  In addition, Bob serves as a board member to the local food bank, Neighbors Organized Against Hunger (NOAH) in Rohnert Park.

A native of Sonoma County, Bob is a graduate of the Santa Rosa Police Academy and earned his Associates Degree in 1981 from Santa Rosa Jr. College and his Bachelor’s Degree in 1991 from Saint Mary’s College.  Bob is the recipient of his Basic, Intermediate, Supervisory, Advanced, Management and Executive professional certificates issued by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Bob has been married to his wife Lois for nearly 44 years and is currently residing in Rohnert Park after loosing his home in the Santa Rosa wildfire in October 2017.
